About working Power

Advancing a clean energy economy

Our mission is to build wealth and power for people in historically underinvested communities while delivering affordable energy, creating local family-supporting jobs, and reducing harmful pollution.

We partner with community organizations, affordable housing providers, small businesses, and labor organizations to co-develop, finance, and enable community-level ownership of clean energy projects. Working Power projects generate revenue for local partners to scale their work and reinvest back into their communities.

Our story

When Working Power was founded, no one predicted it would grow into the organization it is today.

Founders Bracken Hendricks and Ian Fischer created a small company called Urban Ingenuity that designed the DC PACE program, which led to the development of DC Green Bank. They began developing energy-efficient building retrofits where they saw a clear gap between community ownership and access to capital. This led to the creation of  Working Power as a fund to move more capital to get greater mission impact by linking solar assets to community ownership, a structure that was far more scalable.

Working Power gradually took on a life of its own, growing in reach and reputation thanks to the enthusiasm of impact investors and community partners.
